Laura Clemesha - Role of a Goal Keeper and how to combat a tall shooter.

Updated: Dec 21, 2021

Former Queensland Firebirds player Laura Clemesha shares insight into being a Goal Keeper and provides some pointers to combat a tall shooter.

The Goal Keeper has a tough job... being the last line of defence, as the ball comes sailing down the court. The job is intensified when you come up against Goal Shooters like Suncorp Super Netball powerhouses Romelda Aiken and Jhaniele Fowler.

How would you describe the role of a Goal Keeper?

The role of the Goal Keep is to take the shooter out of the game as an attacking option, and be the anchor for the defensive end.

What is your favourite thing about playing Goal Keeper?

I don’t have to do too much running! Just kidding. I like the challenge of reading the play as the opposition brings the ball down the court.

What advice do you have to combat a tall shooter?

Use quick, small steps to keep moving around them. By continually changing position (side, front, side, back) you will confuse the feeder as they won’t be sure where to place the ball to the shooter.

What is your favourite quote?

"The world is changed by your example, not your opinion"
